What is VAR?

VAR, the Video Assistant Referee, is a team of officials who review the on-field referee's decisions using video replays.

VAR can only review four match-changing situations: goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards and mistaken identity. The final decision always rests with the on-field referee, who may consult a pitchside monitor.
